The sanctuary doctrine is one of the most distinctive and foundational teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Based on the book of Hebrews and the prophecies of Daniel, this teaching reveals that Jesus Christ, our High Priest, is currently ministering in the heavenly sanctuary on our behalf.

The Earthly Sanctuary

The sanctuary built by Moses in the wilderness was a "copy and shadow of heavenly things" (Hebrews 8:5). Its services ??? the daily sacrifices, the ministry of the priests, and the yearly Day of Atonement ??? all pointed forward to the work of Christ.

The Heavenly Reality

Since His ascension, Jesus has been serving as our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary. In 1844, according to the prophecy of Daniel 8:14, Christ entered the Most Holy Place to begin the work of investigative judgment ??? examining the records of all who have professed faith in Him.

This teaching gives Adventists a profound sense of urgency and purpose. We are living in the time of the end, and Christ's mediatorial work will soon be complete.

What This Means for Us

  • We have a living Savior who intercedes for us daily.
  • The judgment is a message of hope ??? God is making all things right.
  • We are called to live lives of holiness and readiness.
